I made several trips to this state park drawn there primarily because of the beautiful beach and rock formations. As had been the case throughout most of my Oregon trip, there was plenty of rain requiring patience and persistence. On this particular day, as the rain poured, I sat in my rental car listening to XM Radio and my beloved Pittsburgh Penguins playing in Stanley Cup Playoffs. It was a peculiar feeling for me to be looking out over the Pacific ocean while listening to my home town announcer do the play by play of a game on ice. With time running out in the game and the winner still undecided, the weather began to take a turn for the better. The gloomy skies began to break up and were breathtaking in appearance. Yet I was torn because I am such a passionate Penguin hockey fan. I hated to miss the ending. After scolding myself with all the reasons I needed to get back to work, I returned to the beach. It was completely empty except for the two Oystercatchers that were busy foraging while the gentle rain continued falling overhead. Like most shore birds, they are very busy and don’t sit still very long. Just as the beautiful sunbeams broke from the sky, they stopped what they were doing and hopped up on the rock. These little friends were oblivious to me but like me, seemed intent on enjoying the view. I managed a few shots at just the right moment and when I looked up from the viewfinder, they, along with the sunbeams were gone. Later I returned to the car disappointed to learn we lost the big game but feeling like a winner nonetheless.
